Website FAQs:
Why is BEN switching from using a Google group to a website?
First, as many of you may have experienced, Google groups are occasionally blocked in China. Second, the Google group platform is rather limited in its functionality. With the new website, the BEN executive team aims to provide members with many new great features and functions, such as:
Events Calendar: View and share upcoming BEERs and other energy and environmental events
Community: Set up a personal profile (with the option to import your Linkedin information) and connect with other BEN members of the community
Bulletin Board: Have a burning question? Want to share a relevant article or report? Post it to the board, and interact with the other great minds that participate in BEN
Jobs: Looking for opportunities? Scour the best career opportunities in the sector.
Alerts: Sign up and customize your email alerts to receive daily or weekly digests, or immediate notifications, for all the BEN content you want.
What will happen to the current Beijing Energy Network Google group?
The Google group will be “archived” on April 30th 2012. Previously posted information will still be available to view, but no new posts will be allowed.
How do I start using the new website?
Every member of the BEN Google group as of March 18th should have received an automatically generated email asking them to claim their new account on the BEN website. Simply follow the instructions in the email to claim your account and customize your profile and email notification settings. If you think you did not receive an email or cannot find the email, go to www.beijingenergynetwork.com, click on “Login” and then click “re-send activation email.”
How do I post a job notice, event announcement or other message to the entire community?
Sign in to the website and post a message in the appropriate section for all registered users to view. Every item posted on the website will be emailed out to all registered users either in a daily or weekly digest, or as an immediate notification email, depending on the subscription options of the individual recipient user.
What is the “Bulletin Board” section of the website for?
The Bulletin Board is meant to be the main forum for sharing information with other BEN members. Anything that is not an event or job posting, such as research and other collaboration requests, interesting news items, reports, etc. should be posted on the Bulletin Board.
How public is my BEN account?
When you sign up to the new website, your profile is by default visible to the BEN community. But if you wish, you can control how much information you want to share with others under the “Update Profile” section.
What if I don’t want to create a profile on the website, but still want to receive information about BEN events, jobs and other messages, just like I did with the Google group?
In order to continue receiving BEN announcements, YOU MUST CLAIM YOUR ACCOUNT or create a new account on the BEN website. If you do not claim the account that was generated for you, it will be deleted after 60 days. However, claiming your account does not require you to share any profile information, or to visit the website after you’ve claimed your account, unless you wish to post a message. If you just want to continue receiving information, you will still receive email digests and notifications, according to the settings on your profile. To change those settings, you must log into your account and click “Update profile.”
Who should I contact if I have questions or suggestions about the content or function of the website?
If you go to any page of the website that contains an interactive element (i.e. Bulletin Boards, Events, Community, Jobs), you will see a button in the bottom right-hand corner that says “feedback.” Please click this button and select “General comment or suggestion.” This information will be sent to the BEN executive team.
Who should I contact if I have any technical issues with the website?
If you go to any page of the website that contains an interactive element (i.e. Bulletin Boards, Events, Community, Jobs), you will see a button in the bottom right-hand corner that says “feedback.” Please click this button and select “Bug report or feature request” in the box that pops up. The information that you enter will be sent directly to Energyfolks, the group that supports the BEN website.
